Today, October 1, the Odessa Opera Theater celebrates its 135th anniversary. Our theater is famous for its architecture, and its layout and technical data are not inferior to the best musical theaters in Europe.
The theater building, designed by Viennese architects Ferdinand Fellner and Herman Helmer, was considered one of the best in the world at the time and remains Odessa’s main attraction. The construction was completed on October 1, 1877. It was this date that became the official anniversary of the Odessa Opera and Ballet Theater.
How did theatrical life in Odessa begin?
The first theatrical performances in Odessa began to be given at the very beginning of the XIX century. But there were no theaters in the city yet – performances took place in squares and bazaars, in shops and even in barns, and the scenes were improvised.
In 1803, the mayor of Odessa, Richelieu, sent a request to Saint Petersburg to allocate funds to the city for the construction of a church, a customs office and a theater. And in 1804, permission for the construction of the theater was received. In the same year, the first opera performance took place in Odessa.
