On September 23, the President of the European Council, Charles Michel, called for the suspension of Russia’s membership in the UN Security Council due to Russia’s unprovoked and unjustified war against Ukraine.
Michel also spoke about the right of veto on the resolution, which the UN Security Council has and Russia.
The head of the European Council made his statement during a speech at the UN General Assembly in New York.
“When a permanent member of the Security Council begins an unprovoked and unjustified war, a war condemned by the General Assembly, suspension of that member’s membership in the Security Councilin my opinion, should be automatic,” said Michel.
He also criticized Russia and the abuse of the right of veto in the UN Security Council.
“The use of the right of veto should be an exception, but it has become, as we see, the rule. Reform is necessary and urgent,” said the president of the European Council.
It should be noted that five permanent members of the UN Security Council have the right to veto the resolutions: China, the USA, France, Great Britain and Russia.
We will remind, the day before the head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Dmytro Kuleba spoke at the UN Security Council and said that it is not enough that Ukraine wants peace. Russia needs to prioritize diplomacy over war so that peace has a chance.
