Oleksiy Danilov, Secretary of the NSDC, said that Ukraine is in contact with the commanders of the “Azovstal” defenders, who are in Turkey after the exchange of prisoners of war.
“There is a connection with the commanders-defenders of Mariupol. Believe me, they are in much better conditions than they were in captivity in the Russian Federation. I do not comment on prisoner exchanges, because these are very sensitive matters. Everyone knows that many of our citizens are still in the territory of the Russian Federation,” he said on the air “Great Lviv Speaks” on NTA.
He says that Ukraine is working to resolve the issue so that all prisoners who are in Russia or in the occupied part of Donetsk and Luhansk regions return home.
“This is very difficult and painstaking work that we must do,” added Oleksiy Danilov.
He also emphasized that regardless of the attitude towards Russia, Ukraine observes all the rules of treatment of prisoners of war in relation to Russian prisoners.
We will remind, on September 21, Ukraine and Russia conducted a large exchange of prisoners. Azov fighters and other defenders of Mariupol are among those dismissed. Under the terms of the exchange, five commanders from “Azovstal” will be until the end of the war in Turkey, but their relatives will be able to see them. The rest returned to Ukraine. These are the commander of the “Azov” regiment Denys Prokopenko, the deputy commander of the regiment Svyatoslav Palamar (“Kalyna”), the commander of the 36th separate marine brigade of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Serhiy Volynskyi (“Volyna”), National Guardsmen Denys Shelega and Oleg Khomenko.
According to Ukrainian data, about 800 servicemen of the “Azov” regiment currently remain in Russian captivity. More than 40 of them are women, including pregnant women.
