According to the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Finland, Pekka Haavisto, Moscow’s nuclear threats have forced Finland, which has a common border with Russia about 1,300 kilometers long, to think about how to react and where to get support if it becomes the object of Russian nuclear threats.
It will be recalled that after the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine, Finland together with Sweden submitted an application for NATO membership in May. The process requires ratification by all 30 members of the Alliance. So far, only Hungary and Turkey have not done so.
According to the head of the Finnish Foreign Ministry, Hungary has assured Finland that it will ratify the accession in early February 2023, and he “very much hopes that during the spring the ratification issue will be resolved” in Turkey as well.
